Tractor Trailer Jackknifes, Catches Fire, on Interstate 81
SHENANDOAH COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police (VSP) are investigating a single-vehicle crash that happened on Saturday.
According to an emailed media release from VSP Sergeant Brent W. Coffey, the incident occurred April 19, 2025 on I-81.
A 2025 Peterbilt tractor-trailer was traveling north when a tire blew out, causing the truck to collide with a guardrail, jackknife, and catch fire at the 272-mile marker.
The driver, Giorgi Khutsishvili, 42, of Lake Hopatcong, NJ, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Winchester Medical Center for treatment.
The northbound lanes of I-81 were shut down for approximately two hours. VDOT assisted with the roadway closure and detour.
The crash remains under investigation.
